| Symbolism | ||||||||||||||
| In a non-esoteric sense, symbolism has become a part of everyday life. Corporate identity is as much a part of marketing strategy as the 'guilt' and 'inadequacy' which are played upon the consumer. The instantly recognisable logo is essential in the contemporary globalised world. Yet before this modern phenomenon, symbolism played an equally significant part in the manipulation of the masses. Before the logo was recognised for the part it would play in the global economy the power symbols to invoke fear or devotion can be identified throughout history, the crucifix, the swastika and the Star of David are all examples of symbols which are easily recognisable by most individuals. But other symbols which are perhaps even more persistent and ubiquetous are not so easy to identify, yet appear in our surrounding architecture and on articles which pass through our hands daily. Their meanings are obscure, at least from most people, and their presence is almost universally accepted unquestioningly. Indeed, some of these, in some cases ancient, symbols appear to have been integrated into the logos of many of today's multinational corporations.
