Hewitt
Brothers 01253 355756 Having endured the most miserable six months of my life whilst the builders Hewitt Bros were working on the premises next door, I feel I ought to caution anybody who is considering using this outfit for any construction work. I am not unrealistic - building work is a dirty and noisy business - but it is the responsibility of the contractords to minimise the inconvenience and suffering of those in the neighbourhood of their work. The employees of Hewitt Bros seemed to revel in causing misery to those in the vicinity and were rude and sometimes aggressive when approached. If you are considering employing Hewitt Bros for any building work, you can expect the following: |

Loud music - evidently, not wearing ear defenders has affested their sense of hearing as they required their radio to be played extremely loud in order for it to be heard. They once left it on overnight on top of the roof over my bedroom - I had to climb up and switch it off in the night - when I mentioned this to the workers they left a radio on all weekend locked in the room adjacent to my bedroom. They enjoyed singing very loudly and in the highest register. There never seemed to be any consideration of how the noise affected other people and the radio was often placed ouside my bedroom window even though they knew I had just come home from work and was trying to sleep. Rudeness and agressiveness - Whenever I made any civil appraoch to them about the noise or any other issue they were usually rude and often aggressive. One worker in particular was threatening in his manner more than once. Rubbish, dirt and pollution - There was no attempt to keep the rubbish they produced under any kind of control - it littered the whole area - and when they were using masonry equipment the dust would spread far beyond the area in which they were working, dirtying tha washing of neighbours many doors away. When they were applying tar on the roof, a cafe about 150 feet away had complaints from its customers about the unbearable smell. The drains in the alleyway at the rear are completely blocked with sand and cement which they swept into it when they 'cleared up' (see photo). |

There are very good reasons why I could not complain to the company directly - and the disregard the employees had for the suffering of the local residents compounded the difficulty in resolving the problems they caused. |
